Freedom of Speech
Latest edit: 9/1/18
“Fuck the Police” is a song sung by rapper Ice Cube. He says, “I ain’t doing nothing wrong.” Well, he is doing something wrong; but, the problem is in the wording of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, it says, "Congress shall make no laws"...."abridging of speech"; obviously, that is not correct....
This icon of Gabriel Rollenhagen deals with that subject: the clouds in the sky, represents the world lacks clarity on this issue. The winged tongue, represents the freedom of speech is unlimited in heaven [or your mind]—but, when it becomes audible to others; then, the freedom of speech tapers down and comes to an end, in some cases, on earth. The tail of the tongue points down to two stones on the roadway representing good and bad words.
The larger stones without grass blades on the left side represent words that are harmful to life.
The larger stones with grass blades on the right side represents words that are beneficial to life.
On the next higher layer of ground: on the right side, there are two men: the person in front points with arm to the winged tongue representing he thinks he has the right to speak freely and second person behind him with the rod, grabs his arm, representing the principle of a violent reaction to what you say by another person, if he thinks it is bias or untrue.
The three small groups of trees on the left, represents the knowledge you may want to self-monitor what you say, in private, among friends, and in public.
The group of trees in the middle under the winged tongue represents the knowledge the freedom of speech can be good and bad.
The trees on the left side, represents the knowledge that free speech is used for propaganda purposes. The bush below between the T and E, represents sinister entities seeking political power.
Next, on the higher ground, the five buildings and five trees on the right side, represents the knowledge of five main types of speech that should be restricted by law:
1. making false statements or perjury
2. obscene speech
3. speech inciting violence, murder, crime, etc.
4. libel or slander
5. blasphemy or sacrilege
The smaller row of trees below represents the knowledge there are new dangers to society constantly appearing and growing; such as, allowing Daest to use the Internet to recruit, publishing bomb making instructions, selling blueprints for 3D-printed guns, allowing terrorist groups to use encryption, permitting scams to operate on the Internet and cell phones, etc.
The building on the left side represents forms of good restrictions on the freedom of speech: the right of parents to restrict free speech in their house, the right of the employer to restrict free speech in the workplace, the right to restrict the media from making false or misleading statements, the right of the government to restrict free speech in schools, the courts, in offices, on the floor of the Congress, etc. -- and the right of the church to restrict free speech in the church, what can be taught, and who can speak it, etc.
The ocean inlet or bay behind the buildings or town represents unrestricted freedom of speech, or openings in the law are like letting various kinds of evil forces or enemies come in the day and the night and sack the city.
The mountain in the background represents the Higher Spirit of the earth supports or backs these laws limiting the freedom of speech represented by the buildings on both sides and making new laws to protect society from new evils attempting to gain a foothold.
The icon’s Latin epigram:
LINGVA OVO TENDIS
[language tends beginnings]
